SOUTHERN MAGNOLIA
Magnolia grandiflora

General Notes

Little Gem Magnolia has a compact, upright habit and is smaller version of other commonly used Magnolias. Often the branches remain to the ground, or they can be trimmed up to expose the trunk, making it a stately lawn specimen or shade tree. It prefers heat, and may suffer viral dieback of twigs in cool, moist climates. It blooms at a young age and leaf drop is fairly common. Has Fragrant Flower. SelecTree lists 11 cultivars of grandiflora:  (1)'bracken's brown beauty'  (2)'edith bogue'  (3)'glen st. mary'  (4)'hasse'  (5)'little gem'  (6)'majestic beauty'  (7)'russet'  (8)'samuel sommer'  (9)'san marino'  (10)'st. mary'  (11)'victoria'
A Magnolia grandiflora in Sutter Creek is registered as a California Big Tree. It measures 80 feet high, with a trunk circumference of 180 inches and a crown spread of 72 feet for a total of 278 points.
