General Notes

A versatile tree; typically a wetland tree but can grow in upland areas.

Has fragrant Fruit.

Native to Southeastern United States.

A Taxodium distichum in Capital Parkway #173 is registered as a California Big Tree. It measures 102 feet high, with a trunk circumference of 133 inches and a crown spread of 40 feet.

Family: Cupressaceae
Previously listed in the Taxodiaceae family.

Tree Characteristics

Erect or Spreading and requires ample growing space.

Conical Shape.

Has Deciduous foliage.

Height: 60 - 80 feet.

Width: 25 - 35 feet.

Growth Rate: 24 to 36 Inches per Year.

Longevity 50 to 150 years or more.

Leaves Lanceolate to Linear, Light Green, Bronze or Orange, Deciduous.

Flowers Inconspicuous. Flowers in Summer or Fall. Has separate male and female flowers on the same tree (monoecious).

Brown, Purple or Mostly Green Cone, Medium (0.50 - 1.50 inches), fruiting in Summer or Fall.

Bark Red Brown, Exfoliating, Fibrous or Smooth.

Shading Capacity Rated as Moderately Low in Leaf.

Litter Issue is Dry Fruit.
